Microsoft is again accused of having Windows users too difficult to choose a browser to their liking. The Browser Choice Alliance, which unites browser developers, published an open letter to the head of Microsoft Satya Nadella and demanded to stop imposing Edge on computer owners.

The authors of the letter stated that the browser should select the user, not the operating system. According to them, Microsoft is using strong positions of Windows and popular programs to guide people to Edge and interfere with competitors.

The letter lists several claims. Among them, Edge cannot be deleted, when you try to download another browser, obsessive and confusing messages appear, and after system updates Windows again pushes the user to Edge. Separately mentioned links in Teams and Outlook, which may not be opened in the default browser.

The Browser Choice Alliance also claims that Microsoft anchors Edge as important elements of Windows, including search and widgets, and competitors prevents competitors from offering a simple transition to another browser in one click. According to the authors of the letter, such actions complicate the choice and in some cases actually deprive the PC owners of the ability to use the usual browser in all scenarios.

The coalition considers the problem especially noticeable against the background of growing interest in applications with artificial intelligence. Computers remain an important way to access the Internet, work with the code, search for information and access to network services, so control over the browser gives Microsoft a noticeable advantage.

The authors of the letter require Microsoft to change the approach in all countries, and not only where the company faces pressure from regulators. Among the requirements: to allow computer manufacturers to freely choose pre-installed browsers, remove the misleading interface elements, return the easy choice of the browser by default for all types of files and applications, as well as open all links in the browser that the user has chosen.

In addition, the Browser Choice Alliance encourages you to remove Edge advertising banners from Windows, stop using system updates to return users to Microsoft browser, and remove restrictions from devices in the S-mode where third-party browsers are actually blocked.

According to the authors of the letter, fair competition between browsers is beneficial to everyone: developers will compete in quality, speed and convenience, and users will gain more freedom when they work on the Internet.
