USB Linux Leaves Even Fewer Traces — Tails Now Hides Tor Inside “Normal” Internet Traffic

A new technology disguises Tor connections as regular web activity

The Tails project has released a new version of its security- and privacy-focused operating system. Tails 6.18 brings a major improvement that helps users bypass internet censorship — even in regions with the strictest controls.

The key innovation is support for WebTunnel bridges to connect to the Tor network. This advanced technology disguises Tor traffic as regular web traffic. While traditional obfs4 bridges could be blocked by censorship systems, WebTunnel bridges are virtually indistinguishable from normal website visits. These bridges can be requested from a special page on the Tor Project's website.

To understand why this matters, remember what Tails is: a live operating system that runs from a USB stick or DVD, leaving no traces on the host computer after shutdown. All user activity is routed through Tor, ensuring anonymity and protection from surveillance. Tails is especially popular among journalists, activists, and anyone who values digital privacy.

In addition to WebTunnel support, developers have updated core components of the system:

  • Tor Browser is now at version 14.5.5, with the latest security fixes.
  • The Thunderbird email client has been upgraded to version 128.12.

These updates ensure users remain protected from emerging threats.

Users running Tails 6.0 or newer can upgrade automatically and keep their persistent data. Those using older versions — or who prefer a clean install — can download the full ISO image. Keep in mind that a clean installation will erase all existing data.

The release of Tails 6.18 is especially timely given the increasing global restrictions on internet access. WebTunnel bridges offer a practical solution for those facing censorship and who want to maintain free access to information and anonymous communication.
