At first everything was the old fashioned way. In mid-December, 60-year-old Mikhail Federovich received a call from an alleged security officer of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. He warned that Mikhail’s account was in danger and the money could be stolen. To be even more convincing, a few minutes later he received a video call on WhatsApp: a man in uniform was talking to him, with a Russian flag and a portrait of Putin hanging in the background.
The man in uniform introduced himself to Mikhail as an investigator from the Russian Investigative Committee and invited him to catch the scammers together and at the same time save his savings. Mikhail believed, withdrew 150 thousand from his card, another 90 thousand from a credit card and transferred them to two accounts that were dictated to him.
Only a few days later, Mikhail became suspicious and went to the police.
