The name TheY-NEVER-TEST in Microsoft’s bug report speaks for itself.

Windows Server 2016 remains in Microsoft support, but the May security update has added a new issue to administrators. After installing the patch KB50877537, servers with the name of exactly the 15 characters can stop finding a domain controller, and together with the search, some of the tools tied to the domain infrastructure breaks down.

The failure appeared after the update, released on May 12, 2026. Microsoft reports, that the problem arises when the server name contains exactly 15 characters. As an example in the original description is the name THEY-NEVER-TEST.

When named exactly of 15 characters, DCLocator calls, such as the team nltest /dsgetdc:<domain> /pdc, return the error ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER. Due to the failure of the application and administrative tools can not find the domain controller.

DCLocator helps Windows determine the domain controller in the Active Directory environment. If the search engine returns an error, problems can affect everything that depends on contacting the domain controller.

Microsoft gives the example of the DFS Namespace. The role of DFS Namespaces in Windows Server allows administrators to combine shared folders from different servers into a single namespace. The user or application accesses one path, although the files may be on different servers. When a broken domain controller search, the control of such a circuit may become unavailable.

Microsoft has not yet indicated a ready-to-service decision. The company writes that it is studying the problem and will publish additional information when new data will appear.

Windows Server 2016 is still officially supported. The main support was completed in 2022, and the extended will last until January 12, 2027. After the expanded support is completed, Microsoft will offer up to three additional years of paid security updates through the Extended Security Updates program.

According to the Lansweeper, Windows Server 2016 occupies only 2.2% of all tracing Windows devices, but servers account for 20.3%. Therefore, an administrator with a server whose name consists of exactly 15 characters may encounter the match.

The May 2026 security update has created problems not only for Windows Server 2016. On part of the Windows 11 devices, the patch installation ended in error if the EFI system partition was too small.
