The FBI has launched a new initiative, Operation Winter SHIELD, aimed at increasing organizations' resilience to cyberattacks and mitigating the damage caused by intrusions. The campaign emphasizes closer collaboration between the government and the private sector and offers companies a practical framework for strengthening the protection of their digital infrastructure and production systems.

Brett Leatherman, Deputy Director of the FBI's Cyber Division, announced the launch of the program. He stated that businesses are viewed as full-fledged partners in identifying and preventing attacks, not just recipients of warnings. The initiative combines the best practices of American and international partners and draws on data from real-world investigations that have uncovered typical attacker methods and defense vulnerabilities.

Operation Winter SHIELD is based on ten key measures that can significantly improve cyber resilience. These include implementing phishing- resistant login methods , launching risk-prioritized vulnerability management programs , and routinely replacing legacy technologies without security patches. Special attention is paid to monitoring contractors and suppliers, as attacks often penetrate less secure external channels.

It is also recommended to protect event logs and retain them for a sufficient period of time, use isolated backups, and regularly test data recovery. Other measures include monitoring and protecting all external services, strengthening email filtering, reducing administrative privileges, and regularly practicing incident response scenarios with all responsible departments.

The program is aligned with the US National Cyber Strategy and the FBI's internal cyber development plan. The agency plans to publish additional materials, training products, and video guides. In parallel, the unit is developing a themed podcast, where representatives of government agencies and companies discuss new threats and the basic principles of digital security.
