Microsoft is testing a new Windows 11 recovery feature that can save users from one of the most unpleasant situations: complete reinstallation of the system after a download failure. A new mechanism called Cloud Rebuild allows you to reinstall Windows, even if the computer no longer starts. To do this, you will not need a bootable flash drive, a pre-prepared system image or a good copy of Windows on the disk.
The feature was first presented at the Ignite 2025 conference, and now appeared in one of the experimental builds of Windows 11 for participants in the Insider program. While the Cloud Rebuild is being tested and has not yet been included in stable versions of the operating system.
Today, Windows recovery after a serious failure often turns into a separate problem. If the system stops booting, the user usually has to search for another computer, create a bootable flash drive, download the Windows image and manually reinstall Windows. Even the built-in Cloud Download feature, which appeared in Windows in 2020, helps only if the computer is still able to boot and open the settings reset menu.
Cloud Rebuild solves this problem. The new mode works directly from Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), which runs separately from the main operating system. If the installed copy of Windows is damaged so badly that it no longer starts, the computer will be able to download a new copy of the system from Microsoft servers and the necessary drivers, and then completely restore performance without external media.
Cloud Rebuild does not use files already installed by Windows. Instead, the computer downloads from the Microsoft Updates the current operating system image along with drivers for a particular device. This approach reduces the risk that damaged system files or existing installation errors will prevent recovery.
Microsoft is also considering combining the new feature with the Quick Machine Recovery. In this case, the computer will first try to automatically fix the problem, because of which Windows stopped running. If it fails to restore the system, the device will be able to independently go to a complete reinstallation via the Internet without additional actions from the user.
In the current version, Cloud Rebuild fully cleans the drive. Before starting the recovery, the function warns that all files will be deleted and the disk is formatted. Then the user needs to connect the computer to the Internet via Ethernet or Wi-Fi, check the selected version of Windows, system language and confirm the start of the procedure.
So far, the new feature is designed mainly for system administrators who serve a large number of computers. However, once the test is completed, Microsoft is likely to make it available to ordinary users. In this case, the rollback of the system after a critical failure can become much easier and will no longer require a pre-prepared bootable flash drive or individual computer.
