Amazon helps American security officials use their facial recognition service. Writes about this American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He found out about this by asking the police for information about the use of such services.
Amazon's service is called Rekognition. He can recognize about 100 people in one image and then compare the images with tens of millions stored in databases.
Rekognition is currently used by the Orlando Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff's Office in Oregon. The latter also has a mobile app to add images to the database. Amazon advises police officers for free and, according to the ACLU, is well aware that they can use Rekognition to track the movements of any person.
The ACLU is worried that new facial recognition systems will not target real criminals, but, for example, "minority communities". The Civil Liberties Union, along with two dozen other human rights organizations, called on Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to stop selling Rekognition and similar systems to government agencies.
