Passwords Are Moving Where You Least Expect – Authenticator Users Have Just One Month Left
Autofill is disappearing—and with it, the habit of not thinking about logins.Microsoft has started displaying full-screen notifications in the Microsoft Authenticator app, warning users about the upcoming discontinuation of password autofill. According to official information, starting July 2025, the app will no longer support automatic entry of saved credentials, including usernames and passwords.
What’s Changing?
- Microsoft Authenticator has long served as a free multi-factor authentication (MFA)tool, supporting:
- Time-based one-time passwords (TOTP)
- Push notifications
- Biometric login
- Passwordless authentication
- Until now, it also functioned as a password manager, syncing logins with Microsoft Account.
- Starting June 1, 2025: Users can no longer save new passwords in Authenticator.
- July 2025: Autofill functionality will stop working entirely.
- August 2025: All saved credentials will become inaccessible.
What’s the Alternative?
Microsoft’s suggested replacement: Switch to Microsoft Edge, which will continue supporting autofill using the same Microsoft Account data. What Does the Warning Say?
- A full-screen banner in Authenticator alerts users about the upcoming change.
- It offers two options:
- Export data before July 2025.
- Enable Microsoft Edge as the new autofill provider.
- iOS users clicking "Turn on Edge" are redirected to Settings → Passwords & Autofill to set Edge as the default.
Additional Clarifications from Microsoft
- Saved passwords and addresses remain in Microsoft’s cloud and can still be accessed via Edge.
- Password history (generated passwords) does not transfer automatically—users must manually save them.
- For those who don’t want to use Edge:
- Export all passwords in CSV format.
- Import them into any third-party password manager.
Why Is Microsoft Doing This?
The move appears to be part of a broader push toward Edge integration, streamlining password management under a single ecosystem. What Should Users Do?
✔ Export passwords now if you don’t plan to use Edge.✔ Switch to Edge’s built-in password manager if you rely on Microsoft’s ecosystem.
✔ Consider alternative password managers (Bitwarden, 1Password, etc.) if Edge isn’t an option.
Time is running out—July is the cutoff date!
