The business will receive a warning, the rest will receive tools – this is how the new protection of Google works.

Losing all files because of ransomware is a scenario that still happens more often than I would like. Google decided to at least simplify the consequences of such attacks and added to Google the Disc new tools for protection and recovery.

The company has withdrawn from the testing system for detecting file encryption and rollback changes. During the verification, the developers have noticeably refined the algorithms: the new version recognizes malicious encryption 14 times more often than before. For the average user, the number sounds abstract, but the meaning is simple – the system began to notice the signs of the attack.

This is not a complete protection against ransomware. New features work more like insurance in case the malware has already penetrated the system. If the version of the Disk for the computer notices suspicious actions, it stops the synchronization so that the infection does not spread further, and sends a notification to the owner and administrator. After that, you can roll the files immediately into the state to the state before the attack, without understanding each document manually.

Not everyone will get a full set of opportunities. File recovery is available to almost everyone, including owners of personal accounts. But early detection of encryption works only in some of the tariffs of Google Workspace – for example, Business and Enterprise. In other words, many can clear the consequences, but only users of paid plans will receive a warning about the attack.

The decision will not get rid of ransomware completely, but adds a convenient level of protection and saves the time when the situation is already out of control.
