First, Twitter was shouting to the world, and now X whispers in your ear.
X platform has launched a new service in beta called XChat — an encrypted messenger featuring disappearing messages and file transfers. Musk personally announced the launch, adding that the chat also supports voice and video calls without requiring a phone number. The feature works across all platforms — from mobile apps to desktop versions.
These new developments confirm the company's goal of transforming X into an all-in-one app for communication, entertainment, and business. Musk has repeatedly stated that he aims to create an "app for everything" — a global version of China's WeChat.
The new feature is already available to some paid X subscribers. Messages in XChat are protected by a four-digit access code. According to independent app researcher Nima Owji, the messenger will allow users to create extended group chats and also supports the so-called "vanishing mode."
This is not the first step towards private communication on the platform: in May 2023, X introduced message encryption for paid users, but recently disabled it for updates. Apparently, this update laid the foundation for XChat. Previously, X (and Twitter before it) was known for open statements and internet drama. However, since Musk's acquisition of the platform in 2022, the direction has shifted: he aims to make X a central part of daily life, including personal communication features.
X is gradually increasing its focus on private communication, adding not only calls but also extended messaging features — from editing to encryption. Now, with the ability to call without being tied to a phone number, X is becoming an alternative to services like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal.
Similar functionality has already been implemented in some messengers, but for social media, this feature remains rare. The launch of number-free calls is another step towards creating an autonomous ecosystem in which X could replace traditional apps for calls, chats, and content sharing.
