Now your data is under threat not only from hackers, but also from missiles.

The strike on the facility in Bahrain for the first time in a long time touched not the port and not the oil infrastructure, but what bank services, air transportation and corporate systems are held on. After the attack of Iranian forces on the territory of the country, the object of an unnamed company caught fire. The authorities confirmed the fire and directly connected it with the strike, but the operator of the site was not disclosed. A number of sources indicate the connection of the object with Amazon Web Services. The company itself refused to comment on a particular incident.

The episode looks atypical of current conflicts. Usually, energy, logistics or transport hubs are hit. Here we are talking about a computing platform that ensures the operation of digital services. Such data centers are included in regional cloud zones: distributed clusters, through which companies and government agencies get access to data with minimal delay and with reservations in case of failure.

Violation of the work of even one node in such a system can give a chain reaction. If some of the services are tied to the local area, users begin to lose access to data, and automatic switching mechanisms to backup platforms do not always work instantly. In the Middle East region, such zones are often served by banks, airlines, logistics and state systems, so even a short-term failure can affect several industries at once.

Earlier, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that technology companies associated with the United States and working in the region could become targets. The list mentioned Microsoft, Apple, Google and Meta *. So the blow to the facility related to the cloud infrastructure looks like an attempt to expand the list of vulnerable targets.

A separate problem is related to how cloud systems themselves are arranged. They are often considered sustainable by mixing load and reservation. In practice, a lot depends on geography. In sensitive regions, infrastructure is often concentrated in several key locations. Damage to one such node does not bring down everything at once, but creates a burden on neighboring areas and increases the risk of cascading failures.

The situation also erases the border between cyberattacks and physical shocks. Attempts to hack data centers, attack on networks and services occur regularly, but direct strikes on computing platforms remain rare. In this case, not only the software part is under threat, but also the physical base of the cloud itself: servers, cooling systems, power and communication channels.

Diplomatic contacts between the United States and Iran continue. The media is discussing possible ceasefire negotiations that may be associated with the opening of the Strait of Hormuz for navigation. At the same time, the Iranian Foreign Ministry rejected Donald Trump’s statements about the request for a truce and called them unreliable. There are also warnings about attempts to use the conflict for political and economic purposes.

Markets are already responding to tensions. Oil prices are rising, the yield of US treasury bonds is increasing, and the dollar is strengthening. Violations of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz are pressuring supply chains, and stock indices remain sensitive to any news from the region. Even with the growth of the American market, some indicators indicate the continued macroeconomic stress.

While the main question remains: was the blow to the cloud a random episode or a signal of a change of priorities. If the digital infrastructure begins to regularly fall into the list of targets, the consequences will go far beyond the borders of one region. In such a scenario, failures in the cloud will cease to be an internal problem of IT services and will become part of the overall picture of the conflict.
