According to Atlas VPN, between July and September, the global cryptocurrency market lost over $ 1 billion as a result of hacking of blockchain networks. The Ethereum ecosystem suffered the most, with 20 hacker attacks in Q3.

The published statistics are compiled from the analysis of data on known attacks in this area, collected by the Chinese information security service provider Slowmist. Financial losses were determined taking into account the cryptocurrency rate at the time of the cyber incident.

In just three months, hackers carried out 69 attacks on participants in the blockchain market, collectively stealing $ 1.138 billion in cryptocurrency. Ethereum platforms lost the most - over $ 800 million, of which $ 613 million was stolen in August as a result of the hacking of the Poly Network (through the combined efforts of the hacker, it was possible to convince everything to return).

The crypto exchanges had five hacker attacks, the total losses amounted to $ 114 million. The Japanese exchange Liquid distinguished itself here: more than $ 91 million were stolen from its hot wallet.

In general, over three quarters, the number of attacks by hackers who dream of hitting a big jackpot in cryptocurrency has already exceeded last year's level by 20% - 166 against 123. The 2020 record (133) was also broken, as well as in the amount stolen ($ 5.5 billion, and now $ 6.6 billion).
