Hackers cracked the Nintendo Switch 2 on launch day

Not root, not a full hack—but they changed the graphics.

The Nintendo Switch 2 console has just been released, and enthusiasts have already found a vulnerability. Security researcher David Buchanan was the first to report an exploit in Nintendo’s console that leverages a weakness in the device’s shared library. He demonstrated how, using what’s known as a userland vulnerability, one can modify the program’s behavior without access to the system kernel—for example, making the console display custom graphics in the form of a chessboard.

The exploit uses a technique called Return-Oriented Programming (ROP), where the hacker manipulates the return address in memory to make the program execute unauthorized code. However, in this case, it only affects user-level operations: it’s not possible to gain root access or fully “hack” the console this way. Moreover, Buchanan himself admitted that such a demonstration has no practical use and could theoretically just be a YouTube video—though the developer community confirms the vulnerability is real.

Nintendo has always taken a hard line on device modification. The company has already warned that it could disable the console if a user attempts to tamper with system account services. The Switch 2’s user agreement also explicitly forbids any interference with the software.

For now, the discovered exploit poses no threat, but a new race may be on the horizon: how long will it take hackers to fully bypass the security and gain access to custom firmware? And how will Nintendo respond?
