Australia Bans Kaspersky Products in Government Sector
Australia has officially prohibited the use of
Kaspersky Lab software across all government systems. On
February 21, the
Department of Home Affairs issued a directive mandating the
complete removal of the company’s products from government networks by
April 1.
A National Security Threat? According to
Minister Stephanie Foster, Kaspersky’s software poses an
“unacceptable risk” to
Australian government agencies. Authorities cite potential
foreign interference, cyber espionage, and sabotage of critical infrastructure as key concerns.
Following the U.S. Lead: Australia’s decision comes
six months after the
United States took similar action—
banning Kaspersky’s products in June 2024. Simultaneously, the Australian government has imposed
sanctions on 149 Russian entities and individuals and banned imports of Russian commercial drones.
A Global Trend? With multiple countries tightening cybersecurity policies, experts warn that
national security concerns over foreign software could lead to more bans worldwide.
