Even the sneakiest scammers faced digital justice.
Google has released its 2024 Ads Safety Report, revealing that it blocked 5.1 billion ads and suspended 39.2 million advertiser accounts over the past year. The crackdown was driven by a surge in fraudulent schemes, many of which now leverage generative AI.A major focus was the rise of AI-generated deepfake videos featuring celebrities. These fake endorsements mimic the appearance and voice of public figures to promote scams—most commonly investment fraud and crypto schemes. Google took its toughest stance here, permanently banning over 700,000 advertisers for impersonation violations.
To combat this trend, Google quickly assembled a 100-person task force dedicated to updating policies and improving enforcement. The effort paid off: Complaints about scam ads featuring AI-generated videos dropped by 90% compared to the previous year.
While AI has fueled new threats, it has also helped Google fight back. The company credits machine learning advancements for detecting and blocking malicious ads before users even report them. Over 50 algorithm upgrades were rolled out to catch emerging abuse patterns.
The purge also targeted other high-risk ad categories:
- 193.7 million financial services ads blocked
- 146 million gambling and gaming ads removed
- 122.5 million adult content ads restricted
- 104.8 million healthcare-related ads banned
The report also highlights growing political ad scrutiny. In 2024, Google verified 8,900 election-related advertisers while removing 10.7 million ads from unverified accounts.
The findings show Google’s efforts to maintain ad integrity in a rapidly evolving digital landscape—where new technologies empower both marketers and fraudsters.
