Why did the elusive hacker, who paralyzed the gambling empire, turn himself in?

The series of high-profile attacks on the Las Vegas gambling industry in 2023 has now entered a new phase in the courts. Back then, a number of the largest casinos fell victim to sophisticated network intrusions. They were orchestrated by the organized group Scattered Spider (also known as Octo Tempest, UNC3944, 0ktapus), which at the time was actively using social engineering methods and access to companies' internal systems. The scale of the attacks was so severe that the investigation was immediately taken over by a joint FBI cyber task force in Las Vegas and the LVMPD's cybercrime unit.

During a lengthy investigation, authorities managed to identify a specific suspect. It turned out to be a minor, whose name has not been officially released. After evidence was gathered, he voluntarily appeared at the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center on September 17, 2025, where he was processed and taken into custody.

He faces multiple charges: three counts of wrongfully obtaining and using the personal data of other individuals with the intent to harm or impersonate them, one count of extortion, a separate charge of conspiracy to commit extortion, as well as a violation of laws regarding unlawful computer system activities.

The Clark County District Attorney's Office deemed the charges serious enough to initiate proceedings to transfer the case from juvenile court to the adult judicial system. If the motion is granted, the teenager will have to answer for his actions on all counts as an adult defendant, which significantly increases the severity of a potential sentence.
