The consequences of the attack are actually more serious than expected.

MoneyGram confirmed that as a result of the September cyberattack, the attackers had personal customer data and transaction information. The incident occurred on September 20, after which the company's website and mobile application did not work for about a week.

At the moment, the investigation of the incident is at the initial stage, and the company has not yet established the exact number of affected users.

During the attack, the following were stolen:
  • Names;
  • phone numbers;
  • postal and e-mail addresses;
  • date of birth.

In some cases, hackers gained access to Social Security numbers (SSNs) and copies of government documents, including driver's licenses, as well as other personal data such as utility bills and bank account numbers. The types of stolen data vary from person to person.

It also turned out that the hackers got information about transactions: dates and amounts of transfers. For a small number of users, data related to investigations, including those related to fraud, was leaked. MoneyGram has already notified British regulators of the data leak.
