The first release of the year brought Linux kernel 6.18, a new visual style, and a mode with a nostalgic look for BackTrack 5.

Kali Linux 2026.1 arrived not only with new packages but also with an unexpected blast from the past. The developers released the first rolling release of 2026 and, along with the new kernel, added a mode that almost verbatim recreates the look of the legendary BackTrack 5. For older users, this move feels like pure nostalgia, while for new users, it's a rare instance of a technical update taking on a distinctive character. The release was released on March 24, 2026. The system received Linux 6.18 and Xfce 4.20.6.

The main visual change concerns the annual theme update. Kali Linux 2026.1 revamps the system's appearance from the very start: the boot menu, graphical installer, login screen, and signature wallpaper have all been updated. The Kali team also tweaked the live image boot animation. Previously, the animation could freeze at the very beginning; now, it restarts and looks noticeably smoother if the system boot process takes a while.

The most talked-about new feature is BackTrack Mode in the kali-undercover utility. The developers timed this change to coincide with the 20th anniversary of BackTrack Linux, Kali's predecessor, and sought to restore the familiar look of the old distribution, complete with the same colors, wallpapers, and window themes. The mode can be enabled from the menu or with the command kali-undercover --backtrack. Restarting it restores the standard Kali desktop.

The release also offers plenty of practical benefits. Kali Linux 2026.1 adds eight new tools, including AdaptixC2, Atomic-Operator, Fluxion, GEF, Meta sploitMCP, SSTImap, WPProbe, and XSStrike. In total, the team added 25 packages, removed 9, and updated 183. The developers also specifically warned about issues with the suite kali-tools-sdr: some SDR tools, including gr-air-modesand gqrx-sdr, are buggy in the current release. The team expects to fix this in the next release.

As a result, Kali Linux 2026.1 feels like a rare release where glitz and gloss complements, rather than replaces, useful changes. Users get a modern base with a new kernel, a fresh set of security auditing utilities, and a subtle nod to the era that marked the beginning of pentest distributions for many .
