How Office.eu plans to survive in the shadow of tech giants.

Europe has long relied on American office services. Documents, email, and work files for millions of companies are stored on Microsoft and Google infrastructure. Now, the Netherlands has introduced a service that aims to change that.

The Office.eu platform, a fully European alternative to popular office suites like Microsoft Office and Google Workspace, was officiallylaunched in The Hague. The developers claim the service is owned by a European company, runs on European data center infrastructure, and is built on open source software.

According to Maarten Roelfs, CEO of Office.eu, European organizations have relied on American software for years, effectively handing over control of their own data to foreign companies. The developers intend for the new service to regain control of their information and ensure compliance with European data protection requirements.

Office.eu combines a document editor, collaboration tools, and secure data storage. The platform is designed as a full-fledged office suite and fully complies with European Union data protection laws .

The software is partially based on components of the Nextcloud platform , one of Europe's largest open-source projects. The developers have added their own tools for managing email, documents, and corporate collaboration.

The service has been tested by its first users across Europe for several months. Access to the platform is now being gradually expanded. For now, only organizations that have applied in advance are receiving access. The company plans to begin large-scale rollout across Europe in the second quarter of 2026.

The developers promise that switching from Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace will not require complex setup. They have developed dedicated migration tools for data transfer, and the company says the subscription price will be comparable to existing solutions on the market.

Security Delta (HSD), an organization that unites cybersecurity companies and organizations, considers the launch of Office.eu an important step for Europe's digital sovereignty . The project is headquartered in The Hague, a city that the Dutch government has positioned as an international hub for digital governance, cybersecurity, and technological innovation.

Office.eu was registered in 2024 and launched in early 2026. The developers hope to attract users across Europe, particularly among private customers and small and medium-sized businesses.

In the fall of 2025, it was announced that the International Criminal Court had abandoned Microsoft Office and begun migrating to the European office suite openDesk. The project is being developed by the German Center for Digital Sovereignty (ZenDiS) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The decision was made amid growing concerns in Europe about its reliance on American technology and the provisions of the Cloud Act, which allows US authorities to request access to data from US companies even if the information is stored outside the country.
